Easily one of my favorite events the City has to offer, the 2022 TCM New York City Marathon was as much a sight to behold as ever. It can seem that to many New Yorkers, this day is sacred—like the one day a year where everybody puts their bullshit aside and simply appreciates the existence of other people. That sentiment has only grown since the city has slowly pulled itself out of the depths of the COVID-19 Pandemic, especially after the event was canceled in 2020 for the first time ever.
I’ve been to quite a few large races in my life, but nothing compares to this one. New York City is notoriously unpredictable, but when this much of the population comes out to cheer on more than 55,000 runners, a funny thing happens. The unexpected suddenly kicks up ten notches and becomes predictable without losing any bit of charm… in fact there is more charm to be had than ever.

There’s all sorts of heartwarming moments to experience and relish. Family reunions…charity drives…hearts and records broken…rare views of the cityscape…undeterred characters aplenty…it’s all just so magically wholesome. If not for the impact it has on the whole city (which make no mistake can be gnarly as all hell), the event itself is just such a colorful and spectacular sight to behold.

These images are taken from a volunteer assignment I did for Lungevity's race team. The day began in Park Slope, Brooklyn, (easily the most exciting stretch of the race for spectating) before moving back into Manhattan to station in East Harlem for a few hours.
